Hi friends. My blog is currently on hiatus… but may return if inspiration strikes.
Stay tuned, and explore our past adventures below.
Interlaken | a first venture
We explored the town through a variety of walks, mostly between coffee shops as we hopped from work place to work place, trying different (mostly decaf) cappuccinos, and testing out the variety of chai and matcha lattes as they appeared on various menus.
Monstrous mountains, mermaid dreams
How sharp the mountains feel in my chest compared to the lull of an expansive lake or a laughing stream. Here, water sneaks its way beneath the bright green grass, keeping secret tunnels and what I imagine might be lush underground reservoirs.
The Roads We Travel
Is this small town living, truly? I find myself wondering. This new town has three grocery stores all within walking distance, a hospital, cafes and restaurants to nearly make a baker’s dozen. Cars and hikers and bikers and a regular flood of boarding schoolers… and schoolees.
This being human is…
Tiptoeing around the kitchen as he sleeps on the couch. Hands softening around the hot mug of freshly steeped licorice tea.
The thing is…
The thing is, I want to love it here. Want to let the loose afternoon sunshine soak in me like the butter I overdosed my chanterelles with this evening.
Down in the Valley
I escape down to the valley pretty much any day I can, but most especially on the sunny blue days that remind me of home. No matter how the week has gone, the water is my happiest of places.
Home on the Mountain
As September faded into October, Freddy continued to find his Swiss mountain rhythm — sneaking in a lot more time for midday alpine adventures with Obi — while I found myself more than a tad homesick for the golden Los Olivos hillsides.
A Very Shreddie Adventure | the Nadelhorn
massive knife’s edge most of the way up called for more technical climbing than Freddy’d ever done before, but they made it to the top and back down again safely.
Neither here nor there | September photos
Fall feels like it may be officially upon us — we’ve donned our thicker socks and sweaters, left Obi with other dogs in the slight rain outside the local market, and watched the leaves begin to change colors on our regular walking paths.
Zermatt | a work retreat
Our Zermatt hotel room, a little slice of luxury, featuring an underground saltwater spa and the ever-present European double-single-bed. Plus, Freddy had survived his treacherous overnight hike and managed to make his way to join us for a delightful dinner out at a nearby Italian restaurant. And yes, we found hugos!
A sigh of relief
It really doesn’t get much better than swimming in crystal clear waters nearby early medieval castles.
A big work week(end)
From reviewing student and family covid paperwork to checking kids in for class registration to entertaining parents and sporadically taking over hosting an event in a nearby restaurant, I've worn more than my fair share of hats this week!
Getting to know our home | week two photos
Another round of photos from our meanderings about Leysin and the making of our cozy apartment high on the mountain
Saturday in Vevey
After wrapping a week full of faculty orientation and increasingly busy work schedules, we spent Saturday escaping down the mountain to enjoy Vevey’s lovely weather and farmers market down by the lakeside.
Settling in | week one photos
A few photos from our first week of work as we settle into this new Swiss rhythm:
Lausanne + Pottery Class
I owed Freddy a rather massive “thank you” for letting me bail on the new faculty Ikea escapade in favor of a spontaneous girls’ trip to Lausanne for a beginners pottery class.
Montreux | Obi’s first train trip
We escaped from work early on Tuesday to enjoy the gorgeous weather down in the valley. Obi experienced many “firsts” (as did we!).
From the Lake to the Peaks
Though we’ve been here just barely more than a week (and it’s rained for more than half of that!), we’ve gotten a bit of good exploring in ahead of our work start date tomorrow, August 9th.
A Snippet of Sunshine
I’m currently curled up in our massive bed in our tiny bedroom watching Freddy put together our new Ikea dresser.
