Too steep, too slow, just right!

Feeling a bit too much like Goldilocks trying to find a slope that matches Freddy’s and my skiing pace, but we finally managed to find the perfect slope-lift combo about 20 minutes down the road from where we live.

Much to Freddy’s credit, he graduated from the baby bunny slopes with expedience — though his chess skills also improved due to inordinate amounts of time spent on the very slowly moving magic carpet during the early learning days — and we’ve been moving on to steeper and whiter pastures.

In short: he’s crushing it, managing to stay upright most of the time and slowly transitioning from pizza-heavy turns to more of a french-fry style. I, meanwhile, am starting to get my ski legs under me and (so far) the only crashes I’ve had have been trying to get on ski lifts… not pretty!

It’s tremendously fun on my end to finally have an athletic activity that I am (for the moment) better than Freddy at and can play the role of lead. He may be slightly less enthusiastic about my leadership when I accidentally take him down a much-too-steep-slope but hey, just because I mostly know how to ski doesn’t mean I know the pistes around here at all. And, as we’re learning, not all blues are the same!!!

As we learn how to mount and dismount button lifts, figure our way around the variety of slopes, and nurse aching ankles and bruised calves, we’re having a rather good time. It’s wonderful to have a mostly free (the school pays for our ski lift tickets, and we both got relatively good deals on ski gear) winter activity to do together. Now, if only we could figure out how to sneak Obi onto the slopes, it would be a practically perfect family activity!

Love from Leysin,
